Sepsis was one of the healthcare challenges addressed at the 2015 Patient Safety Movement summit in Irvine, CA. The panel titled “Sepsis: the Leading Cause of Death in US Hospitals” featured Anna Noonan, VP of Quality from the University of Vermont Medical Center, Julia Hallisy from The Empowered Patient Coalition, Kayla Renals from the Partnership for Patients (CMS), Hildy Schell-Chaple, CNS from UCSF Medical Center, Christopher Fee, M.D., Professor of Emergency Medicine at UCSF Medical Center, Richard Smith, M.D., Infectious Disease Secialist Tri-City Hospital and Laura Schlenker from Cerner.

The Empowered Patient Coalition is a non-profit organization promoting patient advocates and health care safety. We are dedicated to promoting patient rights, resolving health care issues that result in medical errors and adverse events, and helping educate people on patient safety issues.

We provide the consumer and the patient advocate a clear understanding of the importance of forming interactive partnerships with providers and give them the tools and resources they need to become capable and confident members of the health care team. Ultimately, the public can be a valuable resource for adverse event reporting and should be called upon to help establish guidelines for patient’s rights.
