The Empowered Patient Canada Society is a registered (in British Columbia) non-profit society founded by Rhonda Nixon of Parksville, BC in 2010.

Rhonda formed this Society following her own experience with adverse medical events in 2005.

Vision:  A safe, error-free healthcare system

Purpose:  The purposes of the society are to provide education and information to the public to increase understanding of patient safety and error prevention in the Canadian healthcare system.

The Society:

  • Provides information, education and resources on patient safety
  • Promotes effective communication between patients and their families and healthcare providers
  • Empowers patients to work with their healthcare provider to ensure positive treatment outcomes
  • Provides information on the importance of reporting of errors and near misses by healthcare providers and patients, and transparency in care, including disclosure of adverse events
  • Promotes a better understanding of the healthcare system by patients and families
